Mapping your Creative Community
This is a workshop Cathy Stubbington and I made up for the assembly of community arts councils. People are given paper and crayons and invited to think of everything and everybody who could be a creative element in a community celebration: choirs and other existing performance groups, landscape features that suggest performance sites, bridges or other structures that could be lit up or transformed into stages or percussion instruments, rooms that could be used for workshops; anything that can be considered an asset. All the elements are then put up on a master map; people call out other things that may have been forgotten and follow different themes and ideas that emerge.
We used this method to great effect with the community of Golden BC to help establish their annual Snow King winter celebration .
